Porto Conte Park

The Porto Conte Park territory offers visitors its numerous distinctive features which are, at the same time, extraordinarily beautiful.

The Park was founded to protect the area’s precious ecosystem, and its surface area covers 5,350 hectares and it encloses an area that is dedicated to the integral protection of flora and fauna that are considered by academics to be among the most interesting throughout the entire Mediterranean. The morphology of the territory is quite varied: the coastal area stretched between Punta Giglio and Capo Caccia while the immediate inland is characterised by low hills which alternate with plains.

The floristic landscape of the Porto Conte regional park is extremely varied: the plant formations that can be found in the protected area include the oak forest, the Mediterranean maquis, from the garrigue and the reforestation of conifers. Among the animals that live in the Park, one of the symbolic species of the Capo Caccia peninsular is certainly represented by the griffon (Gyps fulvus), a great vulture with an imposing wing span which is considered to be among the largest living species in Italy. Unfortunately this species in near to extinction throughout the national territory. Among the most common mammals we recall the wild boar (Sus Scrofa), the Weasel (Mustela nivalis), the fallow deer (Dama dama), the Fox (Vulpes vulpes) and different species of mice. About thirty years ago, within the Noah’s Ark (Arca di Noè) state-owned forest, horses and donkeys coming from Asinara Island were introduced.

You can find the Villaggio Torre Del Porticciolo campsite set in this wonderful scenery, accommodation facilities that stretch over 150,000 m² of pine forest and Mediterranean maquis and which overlooks a beautiful, wide-stretching bay on the North-West coast of Sardinia, with its crystal clear waters and many shades of blue.

A trip to the Regional Park is divided into itineraries organised by the managing authority, in collaboration with the Sardinian Forest Authority that manages the environmental heritage of the Park and the state-owned forest complex.

Four different itineraries are proposed:

  • a trip to Casa Gioiosa, the home of the Park Authority, inside which it is possible to see the illustrative panels that describe the environmental characteristics of the protected area and the teaching laboratories of the environmental centre;
  • a trip to the Le Prigionette state-owned forest, following a tourist itinerary by means of a forest complex that allows you also to see the animal species that populate the area;
  • a trip to Punta Giglio, a  trekking itinerary that takes you deep into the Mediterranean maquis right up until you reach the top where it is possible to see the remains of the World War II military posts;
  • a boat trip, leaving from Alghero port heading for Porto Conte bay and during which the characteristics of the protected area coastal environment will be illustrated.
